Home » Johnson & Johnson Talc Shower to Shower Ovarian Cancer

Did Shower to Shower Absorbent Body Powder cause your ovarian cancer? It’s time to find out.

You may have a case against Johnson & Johnson.

The deadly ingredient? Talc—a natural mineral containing microscopic particulate known to cause cancer when inhaled.

16x increased risk of ovarian cancer

When women apply talc externally, fine particles can travel up to the ovaries, where the particles cultivate cancer. Recent research found using talc regularly raises ovarian cancer risk from 2% to 33%.

Put another way:
Women who have used Shower to Shower for ongoing hygiene may face an increased risk of ovarian cancer up to 16 times higher than women who have not.

Manufacturer Johnson & Johnson has known the dangers of talcum powder for more than 40 years, court records show. It continued to promote Shower to Shower as a feminine hygiene product specifically for use in the genital (perineal) area. And their promotion worked: Many women have used this popular body powder every day for decades. Now, longtime customers who are cancer victims and their survivors are filing suit.

Has anyone won a Shower to Shower case against Johnson & Johnson?

On February 25, 2016, a Missouri court found Johnson & Johnson guilty of fraud, negligence, and conspiracy, awarding the deceased victim’s family $10 million in actual damages and $62 million in punitive damages. Nationwide, about 1,200 victims and their families had filed lawsuits by that date.

What about Johnson’s Baby Powder? Is that dangerous to children or adults?

The $72 million Missouri verdict says: Yes. Women who applied Johnson’s Baby Powder to the genital area are also at significant risk of ovarian cancer. And although research has not linked the topical use of talc in children to cancer, studies show other dangers exist. For example:

  • Talcum powder: when inhaled, can cause life-threatening respiratory problems in children and adults requiring an immediate visit to the emergency room.
  • Some studies show prolonged exposure to airborne talc also causes cancer.

Did J&J know Shower to Shower caused ovarian cancer?

Yes.

  • Court documents show Johnson & Johnson has known for almost 40 years.
  • More than 20 studies, conducted as early as 1971, have confirmed a link.

Johnson & Johnson failed to act—even in 1999, when J&J medical consultant Alfred Wehner wrote a letter to the company likening its talc marketing as akin to selling cigarettes, “denying the obvious in the face of all the evidence to the contrary.”

Why didn’t the FDA protect me from the dangers of talc-based Shower to Shower?

The FDA does not require the approval of cosmetic products and ingredients. If the FDA learns that a product contains an unsafe ingredient such as asbestos, however, it can take action. At this time, the FDA does not test talc-based products for asbestos, which was banned from talc products more than four decades ago.

Talc is dangerous with or without asbestos

Until 1973, it was legal to sell talc containing asbestos, known to cause cancer. Since then, several studies have shown that even with asbestos removed, the remaining microscopic talc particulate in Shower to Shower and other body powders raised the risk of ovarian cancer from 2% to between 20% and 33%.
