In 2015, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) concluded that glyphosate, a key ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup® herbicide, is a probable human carcinogen. This chemical has been found throughout the global food system and to an increasing and alarming amount in human beings. In Oct. 2017, the European Parliament voted to end the use of glyphosate over the next five years.
While Monsanto continues to represent glyphosate as safe to farmers and the public, many lives have already been destroyed by this toxic chemical. The Miller Firm is co-lead counsel in the consolidated litigation against Monsanto on behalf of victims who have developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after exposure to glyphosate in the U.S.
Glyphosate Levels Rise Exponentially in Humans Over Two Decades
Researchers from the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) School of Medicine have found that human exposure to glyphosate has increased about 500 percent over 23 years. This rise coincided with the introduction of genetically modified “Roundup® Ready” glyphosate-tolerant crops in the early 90s, which lead to a fifteenfold increase in the use of glyphosate. The scientists tested urine glyphosate levels from a group of 100 Californians during clinic visits over the course of the study. California listed glyphosate as a carcinogen in the summer of 2017.
“What we saw was that prior to the introduction of genetically modified foods, very few people had detectable levels of glyphosate. As of 2016, 70 percent of the study cohort had detectable levels,” says Paul J. Mills, UC San Diego professor of Family Medicine and Public Health and director of the Center of Excellence for Research and Training in Integrative Health, in a UC San Diego press release. Mills also stated the public needs to be better informed about the potential risks associated with the herbicides sprayed on their food.
European Parliament Calls for Glyphosate Phase-Out
The EU’s current glyphosate license is set to expire at the close of 2017. On Oct. 24, The European Parliament voted for the use of glyphosate to be terminated over the next five years. This non-binding resolution will be followed by a vote by EU member nations, which was also scheduled for late October but has been postponed. French publication Le Monde referred to the parliamentary resolution as “a powerful political signal.”
Parliament also recommended that glyphosate be banned in public parks and households, and in agricultural situations in which alternatives like integrated pest management systems are viable. A number of member nations have already passed similar legislation, including France, which is expected to vote against the renewal of glyphosate’s license.
