Over 800 individuals who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after exposure to Monsanto’s Roundup® are now suing the multibillion agribusiness giant Monsanto. The Miller Firm represents over 500 of the victims who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in the U.S.
In May 2017, clients of The Miller Firm were interviewed and featured by both CNN and CBS. The CNN report, “Patients: Roundup gave us cancer as EPA official helped the company,” highlights the health struggles of Christine Sheppard. The article also focuses on unsealed internal Monsanto documents that reveal evidence of the company ghostwriting scientific documents and attempting to interfere with government regulatory processes.
Sheppard developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after spraying Roundup® on her coffee farm in Hawaii for five years. She and her husband have now moved to California for her medical treatments and have used up her 401(k) to fund her care – her “dreams and savings” have been taken away, she stated. Sheppard is on heavy doses of pain killers and struggles with loss of mobility, which is only likely to worsen. The American Cancer Society explains that more than 20,000 people will likely die of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, in 2017 (cancer.org).
In 2015, The World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer labelled glyphosate a probably carcinogen. This designation was based on the chemical causing cancer in laboratory animals and evidence of it also causing cancer in humans, particularly after prolonged agricultural exposure.
“Generally, when the WHO says something is a carcinogen, it’s a carcinogen,” “we are not alleging that our clients got cancer from glyphosate alone. We are suing because our clients got cancer from Roundup. … Roundup contains animal fats and other ingredients that increase the carcinogenicity of the glyphosate.”
Unsealed internal Monsanto emails discuss past and future campaigns to ghost write papers claiming that glyphosate and Roundup® are safe to use, to “deal with the IARC fallout.” They also contain communications between Monsanto employees and an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) employee about potentially “killing” a federal Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry investigation into glyphosate. The Miller Firm’s investigative efforts into these disturbing issues have led international lawmakers to question Monsanto’s Roundup® marketing practices as well as government approval of glyphosate.
