Monsanto Attacks EPA and WHO Scientists
The Monsanto company is intensifying their ongoing attempts to avoid responsibility for the serious health dangers of their herbicide, Roundup®, and its key ingredient, glyphosate. Glyphosate has been labeled a “probable human carcinogen” by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organization (WHO). Monsanto has rejected and attacked the IARC findings, calling it “junk science.” The IARC is an independent, international panel of elite and awarded experts who specialize in toxicology and the cancer risks associated with agricultural exposure. Several U.S. scientists were involved with the IARC’s glyphosate findings, including Matthew Martin, a Research Biologist with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s National Center for Computational Toxicology. The Huffington Post explains that the strongest findings from the IARC’s 2015 studies “showed a distinct association between non-Hodgkin lymphoma and glyphosate” (huffingtonpost.com).
The EPA has been evaluating glyphosate in an extended re-registration process for over five years. Monsanto has pressured the EPA to repudiate the IARC’s findings and to immediately complete the re-registration of glyphosate. In October of 2016, the EPA was scheduled to hold four days of public meetings regarding the safety of glyphosate. Monsanto lobbied against the meetings and several of the scientists in particular and the meetings have now been postponed. The scientists Monsanto attacks are long-term experts in occupational safety and cancer risk. Monsanto is protecting the economic worth of glyphosate, which is in the billions, over consumer’s health, well-being, and right to live and farm without increased cancer risk.
Cases against Monsanto Centralized in California Federal Court in October
Despite Monsanto’s efforts to stall and delegitimize the scientific evidence of Roundup®’s toxicity for humans, the lawsuits against them continue to move forward. In October, 37 lawsuits were centralized which alleged that Roundup® causes cancer, specifically non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and that Monsanto concealed this toxicity and failed to warn consumers. The U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation (JPML) centralized the cases in San Francisco, California’s Northern District, where two of the earliest-filed cases are located. The JPML ordered this centralization of the cases despite Monsanto’s protests because the cases shared an “overarching query—whether glyphosate causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in persons exposed to it while using Roundup.”
The Miller Firm has filed multiple lawsuits in several state and federal courts in the United States seeking to hold Monsanto accountable for its scientific fraud, which caused thousands of people to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The Miller Firm is presently accepting clients who developed non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma after using Monsanto’s Roundup® herbicide.
